Beneficial and hazardous effects of solar radiation

Hello everyone today I will be researching on the beneficial and hazardous effects of solar radiation.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Humans require between 1,000 and 2,000 international units of vitamin D every day for good health health. Your skin brings vitamin D naturally when exposed to solar radiation, and spending 10 or 15 minutes a day outside may give you all your body requires to be healthy. If you cannot spend time outside, or if you live far away from the equator where sunlight is more diffuse, you may require to supplement your vitamin D intake with tablets or strong foods to get the dosage you require. Sun exposure can also improve skin disorders.

SKIN CANCER

The ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight can also result to damage to your skin. Short exposures to strong sunlight during the summer months can result to painful sunburns, while longer-term exposure to UVA and UVB can destroy cells, changing their DNA and possibly leading to skin cancer. The American Cancer Society commends the use of sunscreen anytime you spend time outdoors, and continuous examinations of any moles, blemishes or other spots on your skin to identify changes that could show malignancy. According to the World Health Organization, malignant melanomas occur each year, many of which are caused from excessive sun exposure.

EYE DAMAGE

Solar radiation can also prove danger to your eyes. The World Health Organization extents that 20 percent of all cataracts stem from or are exacerbated by excessive sun exposure, and ultraviolet radiation can increase ones chances of other eye diseases as well. To maximize someones safety, choose sunglasses that filter out UVA and UVB rays. Phrases such as “UV absorption up to 400 nm” and “meets ANSI standards” show that the glasses block up to 99 percent of destroying radiation from penetrating into someones eyes.

The radiation that may result to eye and skin damage is also dangerous and harmful to microscopic life. Exposing bottled water to sunlight for six hours or more may kill a lot of harmful pathogens, and developing nations often use this technique as a low-cost method of treating water supplies against common bacterial contaminants. Sunlight does not have effects on spores or toxins, so you should stop from drinking suspect water even if you leave it in the sun for a time.

Hi Dorcas

i really liked your research about radiation. while i was going through your research i found out that it follows from the analysis of observation data that the secular variation of the mean temperature of the earth can be explained by the variation of short-wave radiation. i think you should research on the influence of long-term changes of radiation

All the best in your next post work
