Broaden Your Thinking- Poverty in Africa and Trophy Hunting

“The rich in Africa only lavish themselves in wealth so the poverty line keeps on widening between the rich and the poor.” - Denis Chege Unfortunately this is the sad truth today. I have heard many stories of leaders in Africa becoming very wealthy and not doing much to support the poor. “Supports and encourage recreational hunting and harvests within.Farther state, hunting designates wildlife population legally and responsibly is a legitimate, healthy and worthwhile recreation activity.” -...

Broaden your Thinking

I really like these two projects by Amos and Marisa. “How do animal achieve communication using their different structures?” - Amos Muriithi and “Placebo effect: a beneficial effect, produced by a placebo drug or treatment, that cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment” - Marisa Lenarduzi So my question is how are animals affected by the Placebo effect, and if so how does it work work with animals?

The Burn

"Nocebo effect. The patients on the placebo drug read about the side affects they may be feeling and they convince themselves that they should be feeling them; consequently, this leads them to really develop the symptoms." - Marisa Lenarduzi The placebo effect is very interesting to me, and I have never heard of the Nocebo effect. It is the idea of mind over matter. Just your mind, and different ideas really change what you are effected by. This is really cool!

Research 2 - Nocebo Effect

Inquiry Question: Don’t have one yet, for this last week of school I may just research and then come back with a question based on this research next year. Past posts: So far I’ve researched what the placebo affect is exactly, and a little into how it works. Current research: So this week I’ve decided to research what is basically the opposite of a placebo; a nocebo. I mentioned it once or twice in last weeks research but I will go into more detail now. So a nocebo is a harmless thing that...

Black Holes: Week 1

Inquiry question: What would happen if our solar system got close to a black hole? Past research: My previous topic was gravitational waves. I still wanted to stay in the astronomy category which is why I chose to research about black holes. New research: Since I am just starting a new topic, I am going to explain what a black hole really is. A black hole is a space object that is extremely dense and has such strong gravity that not even light can escape. It is a space region where the...

New Research: Placebo Effect

Inquiry Question: Don't quite have one yet. I was just going to research the Placebo Effect for these last few weeks of school. Then maybe I can form a question. Past posts: None on this topic so far. Current research: Placebo effect: a beneficial effect, produced by a placebo drug or treatment, that cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment. The person taking the placebo drug is not aware that that they...

How is Technology Being Used to Influence Dreams?

Inquiry question #9 Last post I was looking into the Aurora Iwink, and different technology involved with dreaming. I have looked some more into the Aurora Iwink, and I still had a few questions. I actually sent them an email with some question, which they are yet to respond to. Sometimes even if you got 12hours one night you won't feel as energized because it depends on what time you wake up during your sleep cycle, not how long you sleep. With the Aurora Iwink you will be able to set alarm...

The Burn

"So how can we prevent our teenagers to get themselves into alcoholism?" - Denis Chege I really like this question because I don't know. We are always told to not drink or do drugs, and some people just do it because they think it is "cool". Recently in class we watched a video of these people who live on the streets who are alcoholics and drug addicts. Some of the stuff we saw was quite disturbing, and eye opening. Actually seeing what it does to people I think has more of an affect on...

The Burn

"How I can solve water problems in my community?" Newton Mwangi I think that this is a really cool project. It's so nice that you are thinking of your school and ways of helping them. The fact that you are able to not only think of an idea that requires much involvement, but find a way to execute it as well, is amazing to me. It is so exciting to see projects that students conduct themselves! I hope you are able to find a way to build your water pan. Good luck!

The Burn

"Does a bigger brain make you smarter?" -Gloria Serianae I think that this is a very interesting question! It's something that I've thought about, but I've never thought to do research about it. I don't know if it's true, but I'm very excited to find out! I don't know if an elephant will be smarter than a dog, just because it's like 20x the size. Also, my family always jokes around saying that the reason for that my dog is so dumb is because he has a small brain, but I have no clue whether...

The Burn - Motivational Factors for Cosmetic Surgery

"The world we live in today is a world that praises beauty. The media plays a large role in most of our lives. We spend a significant amount of time in front of the television or on the internet. In every direction we look, we see these perfect figures of people in our media. Everyone can agree that at that first glance of radiant beauty, she or he suddenly feels overpowered. Such dominance and intimidation can lead people to feeling dissatisfied with their bodies." - Joy Evans Wangui I...

Upcoming Research

For everyone that has been following my past research, you know that it was on gravitational waves. Since I have answered my question (how will the discovery of gravitational waves impact on how we view the universe?), I have decided to move on to a new but similar topic. Outer space has always been an interest to me, so my new topic is about black holes. I do not have an inquiry question yet, but hopefully I will have my first post about it this coming Friday. If anyone has any ideas or...

The Burn- Back to Basics: Motivation and Sustainability

"The problem is that first-world countries are currently leaving a size 200 workboot of a footprint rather than the San of the Kalahari who leave barely the brush of a toe upon the ground." -Paige Hunter For millions of years, the physicality of Earth has constantly been changing. A large part of that change is pollution and global warming. Unfortunately, selfish human actions are the main cause of these big changes. But there is something we can do to fix that. Like Paige said in her post,...

Broaden Your Thinking

For my broaden your thinking, I am going to compare Lucy Muturi's project on Graffiti and Rose Mwangi's project on Tourism. I have came up with a few questions about these topics: How does graffiti look different in different countries? How do people think about graffiti in different countries? Is there different reasoning for why people do graffiti in different countries? I think that both of these topics are very interesting, and there are many ways you can compare these topics. I think...
