My Action Plan

Hello everybody! Last cycle I chose to do an inquiry question where I asked how personality is formed. This new cycle, I’m deciding to try and do an action project! After taking the values quiz, I discovered that my three most important and least important values are…

Most important

  • Equality – I believe that everyone should have the same opportunities and rights.
  • Helping – I believe it is important to take care of others and help them meet their needs.
  • Innovation – I believe it is important to find new and creative ways of doing things.

Least important

  • Tradition – I believe we should respect an established way of how things have been done.
  • Responsibility -I believe it is important for people to voluntarily do what is expected of them.
  • Power – I respect and value people who have the ability to influence others.

I would say these values do make sense for what I believe in. Equality is one of the biggest values that I would personally give myself. I think it is extremely important that everybody has equal opportunities and that we don’t treat others with disrespect just because of race, nationality, sexuality or gender. I also think helping makes sense for one of my values. I would say I am a compassionate and caring person and I believe that we should respect the golden rule and treat others how we want to be treated. My last value was innovation. I found this one to be the most surprising. However, once thinking about it I do personally see myself as a creative, hands on person and I do believe that it’s important to express your own personal creativity to others.

After viewing the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development goals, I have decided to focus on the Climate Action goal. This may not seem like the most obvious choice based on my top values. However, I have an action plan based on this global goal that will help fuel my helping and especially innovation values.

There are many global goals to chose from, I decided to chose the climate action goal because I believe that in order for us to thrive as a community, we have to be supporting the environment around us as well. I absolutely love going outdoors and would hate to one day see a world full of pollution where that is not possible. Even if my action project makes a small initial impact, I hope it will inspire others to do the same. For my action project I am planning to make reusable, recyclable bags (fabric or paper) and then donate the bags to a local store that is currently using plastic bags. I would like to try and make most of them but would love donations as well. I would plan to make around 6 bags a week which, by the end of the school year, would amount to about 102 bags made and hopefully some additional donated. On the bags I would also like to design them with some facts on the environment and ways we can help it to inspire others to make little changes towards helping the environment. I think my action plan will help keep plastic bags out of parks and oceans and will hopefully re-enforce how even small changes like using a re-usable bag can help prevent pollution and climate change.

Throughout my posts I plan to discuss the necessary materials I need , the place to donate the bags, what the design of my bags will be, an update on how and when I will make them and finally when I will donate the bags.

Thank you so much for reading my first action post:)

  1. Hey Cynthia,

Wow! That is so cool that you are making your own reusable bags! I’m looking forward to seeing how they turn out! Plastic bags are a serious issue that a lot of people give in to. Although there is a price to plastic bags, it doesn’t seem to be high enough for people to want to make the change over to reusable bags. I think that if more people had reusable bags, then they would be more inclined to use them, but it seems to be more convenient for people to use the plastic, cheap (although, it adds up!) bags, which is a serious issue.

Here are some sites that could help you make your bags!

All the best! I look forward to your future posts!

  2. Hi Cynthia,
Wow this idea sounds so cool and especially love how creative it can become with designing the bags. I love things that are hands on and would love to help if you need it. Climate change is such a major issue I feel a lot of people may be doing this Global Goal as well but your idea is very fun and different and I can’t wait to see what you do next. I did some research myself and found that the impact of plastic bags on the environment is enormous. As of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them, says Natural Environment. Proving how important your idea is! Keep it up!

  3. Hey Cynthia,
I love your approach to your important action on climate change. By making re-usable bags with cute desgins, it will help prevent pollution but also persuade people to remeber thier bags. At many grocery stores, plastic bags are still in use with an upcharge of $0.05 per bag, but this small fee doesn’t seem effective considering many people are willing to pay for a bag. I can’t wait to read your next post about materials and potential designs. Perhaps in the future, you could make a variety of different sized bags to fit everyone’s needs. Here are some links on making re-usable bags. 🙂
