New Project: What’s involved in the process of songwriting?

Alright! As I have recently been trying to learn a new skill, I figured I’d start a research project on it so I can study how this process works and try to avoid failing this class at the same time!

I often find a tune or melody pop into my head at random times, and I just kinda match lyrics to it. Unfortunately, I only know about 3 chords on the guitar, and my singing voice leaves a lot to be desired. So I can’t carry a song on my own.

I’m probably going to practice these things (I have to post this intention to use as guilt trip material when I inevitably don’t do it) during the process of learning how to do this. I’m not sure how this project is going to go. I might not actually write a song, since it takes a while and my brain just hasn’t been working, but I’ll be doing research on methods to write one. And hopefully get those last few brain cells to do their thing. You know. The thinking thing. That one.

I might also just have a quick point talking about what I worked on during that week.

The only thing I can really think about having to research right now is how to write lyrics. I know there has to be more, but once again, my brain is not giving me much to work with. I’m sure I’ll figure out what to look into as I go.

This plan is not really helpful at all. I don’t even think it’s much of a plan

So far I have a slight idea as to a possible title of the song, so that doesn’t really get me anywhere.

Hey Haleigh,

I like the unique idea you have to look into song writing and what this process consists of. Perhaps to add more detail to your research, you could look into famous artists and how they write songs... this could allow you to compare your process to professional song writing. Just an idea! It might be neat to look at some equipment that is frequently used when song writing and recording songs.

Here are some links to help you with some research for your project:

Good luck!

Hi Haleigh!

I think that it's awesome how you've decided to kill two birds with one stone. Learning how to write or compose songs has always been a thought wandering in the back of my mind. Maybe for your research you can see how other famous artist compose and write songs. Or maybe compare how popular, big artists and smaller, less known artists write their songs.

Good luck on your research I'm excited to see where it will take you!

Hi Haleigh,

There are many ways to write a song, almost as many ways as there are songwriters. Some song writers follow a formal or semi-formal process, but most songwriters tend to work in an random way. While there is no correct way to write a great song, there are techniques that consistently work, and using a process will increase the number of songs that you start that make it through to being finished songs.

Here I got a link for you that will help you go on with your fantastic project . http://www.songstuff.com/song-...s-of-writing-a-song/

Wish you good luck in your project.........

Hi Haleigh,

I think it would be cool if you looked into a specific genre of music first, and focused on lyrics that fit into that genre. Then, you could research the structure of a song in regards to the lyric format. From there I think it would be easier to write a song. I believe that you need an inspiration to begin writing, some experience in your life that left an impact and that you could write on by using a lot of figurative language.

Also, it would be awesome if you could show us some parts of the song you write! I would be very interested in seeing what you come up with!
