C3Broaden Your Thinking

My inquiry question for this cycle is the following: is the progression of HIV and AIDS predictable in all patients? While working on my research for this cycle, I came across Joy Evans Wangui research on what motivates terrorists to commit their acts of violence and killing other people. For the Broaden Your Thinking post of this cycle, I will be comparing my research on HIV/AIDS with Joy’s study of terrorism.

Joy’s research on what motivates terrorists relates to my research on HIV progression in some ways.Though it may seem far-fetched, terrorism is in many ways similar to HIV.Terrorism has the ability to dismantle an entire nation from the inside like HIV because the infected cells and humans bypass every defense the body and society has. HIV cells are infected immune cells so they do not get attacked by the body’s immune system since it recognises it as its own. Just like how HIV infects the CD4 cells which are a necessity to the immune system, Terrorists are able to brainwash citizens to do their bidding. The terrorists look like every other human being and sleeper cells can go undetected for years.

The Broaden Your Thinking posts are there to help one be able to connect to different topics together by finding common ground amongst the two disparate ideas. After completing my third research cycle, I have come to the understanding that even though these ideas are quite different from each other and some may even state that the connection is absurd. However, as inquiry learners, we have the capability to discover new links between various and vast ideas. With this in mind, I have developed the following question: “Like how terrorists brainwash people to do their deeds, could the immune system cells be “brainwashed” by using biotechnology or genetically engineer our DNA and produce more B cells that make antibodies specific to HIV?”
